Here’s some material that I didn’t end up using in my book The Mistakes That Make Us. Maybe that was a mistake.
Looking Inward Instead of Blaming and Shaming Others
Engineer and manufacturing consultant Sabrina Moon learned relatively early in her career that it was a mistake to lead by shaming others for mistakes or problems — following the pattern set by her leaders. She’s grateful for a leader who didn’t shame her, instead coming from a “place of compassion, empathy, and support.”
Sabrina has learned to “dig in and get curious,” finding the “vulnerability to look within and ask ‘what do I own in this?’” and what she can do differently in the future — to avoid repeating some of the management mistakes she made early in her career.
But, as for many of us, this is an ongoing journey.
Sabrina says,
“That’s where understanding shame and resilience skills saved my professional career. Do I still screw things up? Yes.”
We won’t shame her for that.
